Salvete, omnes!

The Illinois Classical Conference again invites you and your students to participate in the annual state Latin tournament.  Whether you are new to the tournament or have participated for years, I think that you will appreciate the competition and challenge of the Illinois Latin Contest.  You will find an overview of the test format and rules as well as additional registration forms at the Illinois Classical Conference website (www.illinoisclassics.org).

Enclosed you also will find the registration materials for the 2009 Illinois Latin Contest

Please read over these materials and return to me your completed forms with payment no later than January 31, 2009.  Please adhere to this deadline as I cannot accept registrations postmarked after that date.

If your school has a conflict with the scheduled Qualifying Test administration week (e.g. your school is on spring break that week) please contact me as soon as possible.  If you are not a Junior High or High School teacher with eligible students, please feel forward this to a colleague who is.  I look forward to another successful year of the Illinois State Latin Tournament.

Pax et bonum,

Jennifer Draper

Overview of 2009 Illinois Latin Contest

Junior High and High School students of registered members of the Illinois Classical Conference are eligible to participate in the state Latin tournament.  High School students must also meet activity eligibility requirements of the Illinois High School Association.

Students will take a Qualifying Exam at their own schools during the first week of March (March 2-7, 2009).

A maximum of eight Latin I students can be registered for the Qualifying Exam.  Five students per level may be registered for each of the other levels, namely Latin II, Latin III-Cicero, Latin III-Vergil, Latin IV, and Latin V.

Students must compete at the level of Latin in which they are currently enrolled.

A registration fee of $5.00 per student is required to cover the cost of materials and test writers and graders.

Registrations must be submitted to the test coordinator no later than January 31, 2009.  Registrations postmarked after that date will not be accepted.

Exams will be administered by a school administrator, counselor, or other non-Latin teacher in the school.  The signature of the test administrator must accompany the completed exams.

All students from a given school will take the Qualifying Exam at the same time, on the same date.

Early in February tests will be mailed directly to the administrator named on your registration sheet.  Please check with your administrator to be sure that tests have arrived at your school by February 16.  If your school has not received tests by that time, please call me immediately.

The Qualifying Exam will be administered during the week of March 2-7, 2009.  Contact the test coordinator immediately if your school is not in session that week.

Completed exams will be returned to the test coordinator postmarked on the day of administration and no later than March 7, 2009.

The top 40 percent of students at each level who take the Qualifying Exam will be invited to compete in the State Finals, scheduled for April 25, 2009.
