Work in Progress:

Translation into English of the Histoire Naturelle des Animaux, des Plantes et des Mineraux qui entrent dans la Composition de la Thériaque d'Andromachus (Natural History of the Animals, Plants and Minerals which enter into the Composition of the Theriac of Andromachus) by Moise Charas, first edition, Paris, 1670, 310 pages of text, plus preface and other introductory materials, and a twelve page epilogue. Notes include detailed comparison with the second edition. Charas, a Huguenot pharmacist and chemist, attempts to present the ingredients and method of preparation of a complex, traditional pharmaceutical formula (dating from the time of Emperor Nero) within the rational framework of the new science of chemistry.

Collaborators:

Dr Bernadine Z. Paulshock, M.D.
Associate Program
former Director, Wilmington Medical Center
1306 Marsh Road
Wilmington, Delaware 19803

Dr Paulshock's interest in the text is that of a medical historian. From this perspective, she has prepared a biographical introduction and is annotating the individual chapters.

Dr Thomas J. Sienkewicz
Capron Professor of Classics
Monmouth College
Monmouth, Illinois 61462

Dr Sienkewicz translates the Greek and Latin passages of the text, in particular the Latin verses introducing each chapter. He also comments upon the classical sources of Charas' formula and text.
