Both Dr. Sienkewicz and Dr. Watkins are experts on the ancient Mediterranean world and have led successful guided tours to Italy, Greece, and Turkey.
Ever since Julius Caesar conquered Gaul in the 1st-century B.C., France has had a strong Latin flavor. Experience the Roman sites of France on the following itinerary:
May 15, 2000 - Depart Chicago to Paris.
May 16, 2000 - Upon arrival at Charles de Gaulle airport, transfer by coach to the Gare du Lyon in Paris. Depart via the high speed TGV for the quick
journey to Lyon. A coach transfer to the hotel in Lyon is also included. The rest of the day is free for rest and adjustment or for independent
exploration of Lyon.
May 17, 2000 - Tour Roman sites in Lyon for a full day in motor coach.
Lyon, the ancient Lugdunum, includes a theater, an odeon, and a temple of Cybele.
May 18, 2000 - Depart by motorcoach for Avignon, via Orange. Visit to a Roman theater, a triumphal arch, and an amphitheater in Orange. Optional visit to
the Papal Palace in Avignon.
May 19, 2000 - Day trip to Nimes. Trip by motorcoach from Avignon to Nimes, with a stop at the famous Roman aqueduct at the Pont du
Gard.
Roman sites in Nimes include the Maison Carrée, the Gate of Augustus, the Fountain Sanctuary (Nymphaeum), a Roman Amphitheater, the Great
Tower, and an archaeological museum.
May 20, 2000 - Visit Arles. Trip by motorcoach from Avignon to Arles.
Roman sites in Arles include an amphitheater (presently used for bullfights and other performances) and a theater.
Also tour of Roman Barbegal east of Arles.
May 21, 2000 - Depart to Nice. Trip by motorcoach from Avignon to Nice with a stop at the Gallo-Greco-Roman site of Glanum, now St.
Remy.
May 22, 2000 - Nice - full day. Visit to the Roman Baths in Nice. Optional side trip to the Roman town of Cenemelum Optional evening dinner in Monaco.
May 23, 2000 - Return to Paris. Depart Nice on the TGV for Paris.
The evening is free to explore Paris.
May 24, 2000 - Paris full day.
Tour of Roman Paris, including the Parvis of Notre Dame, the Roman Baths at Cluny, the Roman Arena (les Arenes de Lutece. Farewell Dinner.
May 25, 2000 - Depart Paris to Chicago. Group transfer to airport included.
