2009 FOX WRITING CONTEST
AT MONMOUTH COLLEGE

The Department of Classics at Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois, is proud to announce the winners of the twenty-fourth annual Bernice L. Fox Classics Writing Contest. The topic of this year's contest, open to all high school students, was “Twelve Olympian Gods for 21st Century America: If the twelve Olympian deities of Greece and Rome were worshipped today what would be their areas of interest, attributes, etc.?”  This year there were 184 entries from 54 schools in 19  states.  Each entrant receives a certificate of participation from Monmouth College.

The winner of a $250 cash award is Ursula Quinn of Irvington High School in Irvington, New York. Ursula is a student of Ms. Cella. The winning entry can be read at: http://department.monm.edu/Classics/Department/FoxContest/Ursula%20Quinn.pdf.

Honorable mentions (listed randomly by school) were awarded to the following ten students: Kimberly Read of Amarillo High School in Amarillo, Texas (Teacher: Ms. Laura Giles; Christian Letourneau and Grace Glynn of Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine (Teacher: Ms. Sally Cody); Jorie McElvain of St. Charles East High School and Karaina Callahan of St. Chalres North High School in St. Charles, Illinois (Teacher: Mrs. Jennifer Clow); Abigail Lee Brown of Cono Christian School in Walker, Iowa (Teacher: Mr. Joshua Haveman); Renee Girard of Bishop McGann-Mercy High School in Riverhead, New York (Teacher: Mrs. Bertolotti); Christina Lorey of Wheeling High School in Wheeling, Illinois (Teacher : Mrs. Cynthia Carro); Tom Markham of Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennesse (Teacher: Dr. Rick Seay); and Ned Kleiner of Mount Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown, Mass. (Teacher: Ms. Marjorie Keeley).

This essay contest honors Bernice L. Fox who taught English, Latin and Greek at Monmouth College from 1947 to 1981 and who also served for some time as chair of the Department of Classics. Dr. Fox spent much of her life in promoting the study of Latin in Illinois high schools. The college welcomes suggestions for future contest topics. Please contact Dr. Thomas J.
