Height: 4 1/2" (12.2cm)
Material or Medium: Marble
Date of Origin: 2nd-3rd Centuries, CE - Rome
Description: Obviously broken off some larger piece, this head shows no specific identification as Dionysus. Its long, unkempt hair and think neck suggest strength, and the bashed in chin and scratched forehead, though not part of the artist's design, give the god a sullen, coarse look. This is the aspect of the god whom Pentheus encountered (in The Bacchae), not the carefree, fun-loving god of wine.
